Among Women #129 Dealing with Miscarriage, Part 1

Among Women 129 features the first of a two-part series on miscarriage, featuring the writing and practical wisdom of author Karen Edmisten. Drawing on her latest book, After Miscarriage, A Catholic Woman's Companion to Healing and Hope, Karen and Pat have an extended conversation on this tender subject, that is so often hard to talk about. On this episode, they discuss the emotional upheaval of miscarriage and ways the Christian community can offering prayers of support, masses of remembrance, and assurance of the mercy of God toward a child that does not live to experience the sacrament of baptism.

This episode also explores the Old Testament's biblical account of Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Hannah's life is a profound example of a praying woman dealing with infertility, and, later, as a witness of a praying mother as God grants an answer to her prayers. Listen to the podcast here, or download it from iTunes.

The sad anniversary of Roe Vs Wade... some podcasts that speak to life issues...

Here's a reminder about previous Among Women episodes that speak to life issues. Each episode has its own page that lists links to resources that respect life.

The following four episodes are no longer downloadable, but can be listened to online on the Among Women website.

Among Women 29 -- Guest Kathleen Fitzpatrick chronicles her journey of becoming pregnant as a college student and dealing with her process of acceptance, and her choice to give birth to her son and raise him as a single mother. Statistics show that 10% of all college aged women become pregnant every year. That's why Kathleen's story is so important, and why we need films and information that reach out to women in that age group that accounts for 45% of all abortions. (<--note: this link opens a .pdf file)

Among Women 30 -- Guest blogger and pro-life activist Leticia Velasquez discusses respect life advocacy and building the "culture of life". She gives valuable tips on how average citizens can stay informed on issues and awareness.

Among Women 28 -- Guest Merry Nordeen pioneered the "choose life" specialty license plates now available in Massachusetts. Merry also discusses how the initiative can come to the other states in the Union.

Among Women 40 -- Guest Earline Tweedie shares her faith story and her experiences of raising a son with Downs Syndrome.

The following episodes are available on iTunes or at the Among Women website.

Among Women 74 -- Guest Jessica Schacle, then a high school student, discusses her reasons behind her pro-life advocacy. This episode also features teaching on the Church's profound understanding of the dignity of the human person.

Among Women 75 -- Guest Dr. Theresa Burke, an international expert on post-abortion stress and healing, as well as a clinical psychiatrist, discusses the process of healing after an abortion. Many great resources are available through Rachel's Vineyard.

Among Women 120 -- A compelling story of birth mother and an adoptive mother talking about the decisions they made, the prayers they prayed and the daughter they share via an open adoption... 14 years later after the child was placed for adoption.

Among Women podcast - On hiatus for a couple weeks!.

I am taking a podcasting break until mid- January. Hope to be back around Jan 12 or so!

You can find links for archived podcasts cataloged by topic, saint, and guest at the Among Women Index page. Maybe there's something in our archives that will interest you while you are waiting for the next new AW?

Don't forget, as an AW subscriber, you get the podcast as soon as it uploads to iTunes. Click on this link to subscribe to Among Women.

One more thing, in case you missed the news, SQPN has 4 new affiliates: check 'em out!

In the meantime, let us pray for each other! I'll still be doing some moderate blogging, just not recording until into the new year!

Among Women Podcast #109 - Metanoia*

Among Women 109 welcomes AW listener and current third-order Carmelite aspirant, Erin Aldrich Miller, as she recalls the many steps of her reversion and her quest to learn to pray. From her challenges in her college days to being a young wife with a baby on the way, Erin shares the ups and downs of life... from grief, mistakes, and emptiness, to being "recruited" by St. Teresa of Avila and learning the ways of Carmelite spirituality.

I also profile the wisdom and exemplary life of St. Teresa of Avila, with a reading from the saint, and commentary by Pope Paul VI and Pope Benedict XVI on her exemplary life. Listen to the podcast here.

And time's a wastin'!  Remember, I am also taking audio feedback and written feedback for an upcoming AW Special Edition: What I Love About the Rosary.  To participate, just share what you love about the Rosary, by calling our feedback line at 206-203-2024, or message via Facebook at the Among Women Podcast page. Or email me at amongwomenpodcast@me.com. Audio files that you record on your mobile phone or via iTunes are good too!

Entries must be received by 6pm EST, Monday, Sept. 26. All participants will have their names placed in a free drawing for a handcrafted rosary from Rustic Rosaries by Margaret Rose (made of beautiful blue pearls!) You can see it here...

*Metanoia - A Greek word that means "change of mind". The biblical term for that repentance or complete change of heart which turns one away from sin to serve the living God.

Among Women Podcast on Hiatus til July 13

It's summertime and don't we all have a few things going on? The podcast will be quiet, but the blog will still be active. I'll look forward to returning with a new podcast on July 13th. Browse our AW archives from the last two years.

Or go visit our podcasting friends at Catholic Weekend, and the entire SQPN line-up. Or check in with Faith and Family Live Cast, Catholic Moments, and Catholic Vitamins.

And for Sunday inspiration, I always recommend Fr. Barron's Word on Fire.

For your reading pleasure, I'm still over at Patheos every week.

Among Women Podcast reaches 100 episodes! A Special Edition!

The Among Women podcast turns 100 today -- 100 episodes that is! We've packed the show with listener feedback and begin part one of a two-part discussion on women mystics with special guest, Mariologist and theologian, Dr. Virginia Kimball, who first helped launch AW's debut episodes way back in the spring of 2009.

Join me and my listeners for a little retrospective as well as some perspective on the two year history of this podcast and the community that has taken shape among these women.

Then join us as we dive into learning about the desert mothers, represented by Amma Syncletica, plus we'll discuss Hildegard and Catherine of Siena.

It's an extended-length podcast, in gratitude for all the blessings of the first 100 episodes. Listen in!

My Catholic Media Favs

Today is Catholic Media Promotion Day! These are my favs!

Favorite Blogs or Websites:
Ok, I have a gazillion blogs and websites that I already brag on simply by placing them in my sidebar here at the Among Women blog, so do check them out. But here are a few more that I like:
  1.  The Catholic Portal at Patheos - Fresh! Filling! Fascinating! I'm always learning here!
  2. New Advent - love the roundup on the landing page, and of course the Catholic Encyclopedia is very useful study tool.
  3. Catholic Lane - new up-and-coming general interest & news site.
Favorite Podcasts:
  1. Word on Fire: The Sunday Sermon by Fr Robert Barron - Indispensable - Even my teenage son likes it.
  2. Catholic Weekend from SQPN - I can't always listen to all the SQPN podcasts that I would like to in a given week, but this one features a panel with many of the SQPN personalities that I enjoy.
  3. Catholic Information Service from the Knights of Columbus -- multiple downloaded podcasts for your Catholic growth.
Books:
I am listing 2 new books that I am excited about and one that I continue to use these last 3 years since it came out:
  1. A Garden of Visible Prayer: Creating a Personal Sacred Space One Step at a Time by Margaret Rose Realy (2011).
  2. The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming our Passion, Purpose, and Sanity by Meg Meeker, MD (2011).
  3.  Jesus, Present Before Me: Meditations for Eucharistic Adoration, by Fr. Peter John Cameron, OP
Catholic Media:
It's hard to not give a shout out to well-established Catholic Media players like diocesan newspapers, Catholic TV, EWTN, and all the Catholic radio stations and shows that are out there.  Instead I'd like to focus on some web-based outreaches that underscore the new evangelization on the digital continent very well:

  1. For news affecting the global church: Rome Reports
  2. For the best Catholic video advancing the new evangelization: Grassroots Films, Brooklyn NY... like this video about World Youth Day, and this video they produced on vocations within the Archdiocese of New York.
  3. For shows on faith-related issues: NETNY... I like Currents and In the Arena,

Smart Phone App:
  1. Rosary Miracle Prayer App from Daughters of St. Paul - I love praying the rosary with the Daughters, especially when I take a walk outdoors!
  2. VerseWise's Holy Bible: Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition - I've used others, this one in now my favorite. It's my favorite.
  3. Magnificat App - My favorite daily devotional in print, now comes to my iPhone. I always have it with me!
Hidden Gems:
  1. St Charles Borromeo's searchable database for the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Now with a mobile application.
  2. Divine Mercy - This is my favorite apostolate-oriented website. Others could learn from them. Oh, and the hidden gem within the gem is this series of articles by Dr Stackpole.
  3. The Angelus sung in Latin. (I'm still trying to learn this! But the Daughters of Mary sing it beautifully!)

Why I have not posted on The CNMC

Photo of me, courtesy of Jeff Geerling, minutes after the conference ended... as I said goodbye to the folks on the tall trolley bus headed back to Boston.

You'd think, having been the local conference coordinator for the Catholic New Media Celebration, (CNMC), I'd be the first to post wildly about the success of the event. I have not... and there are good reasons for this.  People have been emailing and FBing me saying stuff like "hope you are relaxing now" or "enjoy the summer".  Fat Chance!

1. I've been ridiculously busy doing a few mopping up post CNMC- chores, and having to do actual work that I put aside in the 3 weeks leading up to CNMC, and as they say... payback is a... well, maybe its better said like this: first you play, then you pay.

2. So many fine folks are already posting amazing recaps, you don't need one from me. Let me point you to the official recaps we find at SQPN at this page.  Go enjoy the CNMC talks recorded on U-Stream here.

3. I have had a host of personal family obligations that needed my direct attention and participation.

4. I am in a CEU course on adult faith formation, and the nice prof let me out of class for a bit, now I'm back and a bit behind in my work... um, more than a bit.

5. There was a podcast, and some articles, that needed tending to immediately.

6. Believe it or not, another future conference coordination job needed some attention as well.

7. And heck, there was laundry to do too!

However, I am planning on fully relaxing and engaging the family this weekend, when my long lost (read: recently moved out of state) son returns home for a little family reunion. And my hubby comes home from his third conference in as many weeks. So, please keep the Gohn clan in your prayers as we seek to become acquainted with one another!

Thanks to everyone who helped my CNMC a memorable event:  the SQPN board and affiliate podcasters, the speakers, the Archdiocese of Boston, Catholic TV, our many sponsors, and the great volunteers who cheerfully said "YES" to me whatever I asked of them.... you all have taken up a great deal of real estate in my heart, and are in my thoughts and prayers.

And on the lighter side of things for Mother's Day...

...I was a guest on this week's edition of Catholic Weekend over at SQPN, with host Capt. Jeff Nielsen, and a few of my favorite fellow cyber-Moms and MomsIRL, Maria Johnson and Lisa Hendey.

Together, among other things, we talked about motherhood, driving carpools, not having to cook on Mother's Day, plus Lisa's great new book, The Handbook for Catholic Moms, and the upcoming Catholic New Media Celebration.

The podcast will be posted here sometime later today. Otherwise, look for episode 25 of Catholic Weekend on SQPN or over at iTunes.

Theology of the Body and Advent...

Ladies, just in case no one ever told ya... it is all about you... so says Fr. Thomas Loya in this most recent article. Yes, believe it or not, he ties the message in with Advent and Christmas.

Fr. Thomas Loya, a big-time promoter of theology of the body, always makes me think... and his podcast A Body of Truth is a thoughtful, provocative, challenging, and engrossing program on topics in life and love as seen through the lens of theology of the body.

How Can I Keep from Singing? (A Podcast!)

Thanks to singer-songwriter-podcaster-blogger Susan Bailey for inviting me to be a guest on her podcast How Can I Keep from Singing?

Together we share about the delicate subject of both of our husband's unemployment and "keeping the faith" through it all.

Susan offers this encouraging series of podcasts specifically dealing with the problem of unemployment at this time in our nation's history. And she shares from a faith-filled perspective.

You'll also enjoy her music both on the show's intro and in the song at the end!
Find out more about Susan Bailey's varied gifts and ministry here.  (Be sure to check out here "Sung Rosary" -- Susan's unique offering to rosary lovers all over the world!)
